A busy week at Orkney Golf Club

Despite the Kirkwall Open being over for another year, Orkney Golf Club has still been a busy place over the last week.

The RNLI Trophy was played on the Wednesday before the Open, with a very good entry of 49 gents.  A stableford format competition, it produced some stunning scores with nine players breaking the 40 point barrier.  Third was Stewart Kemp with 43,  second was Owen Reid with 44 points but, winning with a stunning score of 47 points with 3 birdies in a one under par back 9, was Chris George.

Two summer league rounds were completed over the past week. Pete McKinlay won week 10 with a nett 65 and Brian Kane continued his fine season winning round 11 on nett 66.

Last Friday saw a poorer turnout of only 11 gents take part in the shotgun start John Bews seniors Trophy.  Third spot went to Malcolm Smart on nett 68.  Andy Kemp gained second spot with nett 67 while Derek Robb claimed the victory with a 75 gross for nett 65 and a two shot advantage.

Rolling into this week, the seniors continued with their monthly medal with 16 taking part.  Stephen Hagan and John Thompson tied on 40 points with John winning the medal on countback.

The first of the matchplay finals also took part last week.  Moira Nicolson retained the Nicolson cup for mixed doubles, along with this year’s partner Robbie Norquoy, in an epic final against Brian Kane and Jane Nelson.  The match was only concluded on the third extra hole after Moira and Robbie managed a par for the win.

Next week has the Williamson’s Open on Saturday, with the matchplay competition being played throughout the preceding week and the final running in conjunction with the Open next Saturday.  This Saturday has the County Show Open on Saturday and the Cupal Cup and Shield on Sunday.
