July Seniors Medal
Orkney golf club held 3 separate competitions over the course of the past week.
Monday saw the July Seniors Medal played with a lower than normal turn out of only 11,
third spot went to Richard Ryder with 37 points beating Stewart Fotheringhame on countback, second was Stevie Linklater on 38 points but out in front and picking up the medal was Brian Firth with 39 points.
Red Cross Cup
Wednesday saw a fine turnout of 43 playing for the Red Cross cup. Conditions were generally warm and sunny but a stiff South Easterly persisted all day making it tricky for but obviously not for all players.
Jack Tait took third spot on nett 63 while Bob Adamson obviously seems to enjoy the luxury of a borrowed trolley that helped ease him to a nett 60, which would normally win any competition,
but not today as Alistair Linklater posted his first ever score under 90 with a very steady 88, to give him a nett score of 58 for a 2 shot win, and probably a later tee time in the Kirkwall Open. Low gross was a fine 68 from Michael Schinkel,
Centenary Cup
Finally, Sunday saw the club hold the Centenary Cup in the afternoon with a shotgun start.
A slightly poorer entry than normal of 27 gents teed off in bright and warm conditions with the south Easterly breeze gradually easing. The standard was again very good, in third spot with a nett 62 was Nicky Bichan who has posted several low scores this season. Second place went too Martin Flett who must be regretting his 8 on the 2nd as he finishes with a nett 61, losing out by one shot too his Holm buddy Alan Donaldson who carded an excellent gross 73 for a nett 60 and victory. A run of 3 birdies on 11, 12, and 13 helped in no small way. This capped of a fine weekend for Alan as the previous day he walked away with the nett trophy in the Hope Open.
This coming weekend sees the popular KP Tid memorial played for on Saturday and it’s hoped for a good turnout for this competition and the presentation afterwards.
Wed the 19th it’s the Glass Shop medal and then the popular precursor to main open the Lows open is held on Saturday the 22nd.
The following week sees our main 36 hole open the JW Gray and Highland Park Kirkwall Open being held; there are still some spaces available. Entry too all the above competitions is through the club website.
