Orkney Golf Club
Orkney Golf Club was a hive of activity this past Saturday, when it played host to the first qualifier for the Orkney matchplay championships, the R Clouston Ltd Open. Exactly 98 gents teed off in conditions which were favourable throughout the day. A light easterly breeze and reasonable overhead conditions making it a much more pleasant experience for most than the recent cold, wet and windy weather. The course once again was in fantastic condition with the green's running true and the fairways starting to dry out. This allowed for a bit more run which, given the recent spells of rain, is a reflection on the continued excellent work of our Greenkeeping team. The morning players set some reasonable targets. G Bruce Moar posted a low gross of 71 which also led the nett section with a 65 nett. Several players came close to the gross score with 72s, but only Kenny Sinclair could match it but staying behind Bruce on countback. Eventually though, regular gross winner Steven Rendall, pipped Bruce with a gross 70 to lead the qualifying for the matchplay gross with only 5 shots separating the top 17 players. The overall cup is a nett prize and for a change this season several players managed to break the course par. Early leader was Bruce Moar with a 65 nett but this was overtaken by Graeme Tait later in the morning with an excellent round of 79,15,64. For a while this was looking good enough for the victory until 006, Scott Bond, from Stromness Golf Club returned his best ever back nine score of 37 for an overall total of 78,16,62. This to secure a two shot win over Graeme. Several players eventually tied on nett 65s and it was Robbie Norquoy who claimed third on countback pushing Richard Ryder into the fourth and final place in the prize list.Nearest the pins were won on the 4th by Stewart Thompson and Gareth Robinson and on the 18th by Steven Rendall and John Heddle.Overall it was a fantastic day of golf and the club are indebted to Bob and Michelle Clouston for their continued support of this excellent tournament of golf. Last Wednesday saw the May medals played in very good conditions with 39 players over the two division's taking part. In division one, third was John Thompson with 76,8,68, second, Mr steady Brian Firth with 73,7,66 and taking Brian on countback was the ever reliable Pete McKinlay, with 68,2,66, which was also the low gross. The second division was decided without the dreaded countback,m. Third was Robbie Norquoy on 79,10,69, second Willie Marwick 78,10,68 and first, Bob Adamson with 82,15,67.Finally on Sunday, nine teams, including team's from both Stromness and South Ronaldsay Golf Clubs, took part in a Texas Scramble fund raiser for the MND charity.Scoring proved slightly tough on another good day, condition wise. With a tie for first place on nett 55s, the team of Stu Slater, Sean Tait, Pete and Stanley McKinlay just overtook The Hope Pirates team of Ross Smith, Ross McQuillan, Martin Peace and James Bews.Over £300 was raised for this worthwhile charity. After such a great event, the club hope to hold more fun charity events throughout the year. Evening folks, quick course update:This week greenstaff applied a selective herbicide to the fways, aprons and roughs, to control broadleaf weeds, because of this, fways and aprons won’t be cut this week, to allow the plant full uptake of the herbicide. We have started raking the fways to lift the leaf and then mow behind, similar to a light verticut, simple but effective, we will continue this next week. The last section of refurbished ditch at 6 will be in play as of tomorrow, with just a few small areas marked as GUR, so please take note. The turf at the 9th bunkers will remain GUR. Lastly, this Sunday afternoon greenstaff will be starting spring greens renovations. Sunday will involve verticutting, we plan to start at 3pm and we should be finished by 6pm, please give staff the right of way on the green until it is clear. 👍🏻Monday, greens will be topdressed then spiked, and finally rubbed in with the drag mat. Once again please give greenstaff right of way, it’s a very time consuming process, so your patience is greatly appreciated 🙏🏻 We plan to be finished this by Monday afternoon.CheersChris ... Running throughout the rest of the week, alongside the W Hourston Open, were two more medals.Last Wednesday saw the Glass Shop April medal played, with a good turnout of 35 players taking part over the two sections. A stiff north westerly with again bitterly cold conditions, led to tough playing conditions for everyone. In the first division it was veteran Pete McKinlay, a master of the wind, who came out on top with an excellent nett 70,3,67. A four shot victory over low gross Michael Schinkel's 69,+2,71. In third was Brian Firth with 79,7,72.In the second division the scoring was a bit tougher with Steve Lycett's nett 70 taking first spot. Gordon Mulraine was second on countback from Ryan Sutherland, both players with nett 73s.It was the turn of the seniors for their medal on Monday with a lower than normal turnout of 13 playing in another bitterly cold south westerly wind keeping the stableford scoring low. Only George Rendall managed a par score of 36 points to scoop the medal and add to his victory of last weekend. Second was Stewart Kemp on 33 points and third Robbie Norquoy with 31. Along with the R Clouston Open next week, Sunday sees an MND Texas scramble fundraiser with teams of 4 players entering. A good turnout is hoped for to support this very good cause. Monday has the May seniors medal and Wednesday sees the Gorns Trophy up for grabs, so another busy week looms large for Orkney Golf club. PD HOOK ... See MoreSee Less

W Hourston Jeweller OpenSeventy two competitors took part in the W Hourston Jeweller Open on Saturday 27th April, marking the 20th Anniversary of the first playing of this popular competition in 2004.Considering the poor weather thus far this season, Head Greenkeeper Chris Rae and his team had the course in excellent condition, with the freshly rolled greens running fast and true. A stiff south easterly breeze and occasional wintery showers made for testing scoring conditions. In the gross section Liam Smart, the winner of the competition on 2022, took third place on 74, just ahead of Lee Findlay, Denis Harvey, Kenny Sinclair and Scott Walls all on 75. Second place went to Steven Walls on 73. However, the clear winner in the gross section, by six shots, was Michael Schinkel, whose 67 gross included an eagle on the twelfth hole plus three birdies. In the nett section five players, James Bews, Stewart Gray, David Kirkpatrick, Sean Sinclair and Eddie Brown were all tied on 70, with Sean taking four place overall after a countback. The first ever winner of the competition in 2004, Eddie Brown, rolled back the years to take third place and just ahead of them all in second place was Kit Bichan on 68. However, first place overall went to Michael Moodie, who followed up his victory in the Highland Park Open earlier this month with another great score of 66 to take victory by two shots.Special thanks again to Tom MacPhail of W Hourston for his continued sponsorship of this popular event. This weekend sees the playing of the R Clouston Open, which also serves as the first qualifying round of the Orkney Matchplay Championship. Entries close as always at 6 pm on Thursday 2nd May.Back Row lr: Neil Tait-Captain, Shaun Tait, Michael Schinkel, Kit Bichan, Shona Croy, Kathryn Sutherland, Moira Groundwater, Liz Pirie Front lr: Michael Moodie, Tom MacPhail, Sally Inkster ... This past week saw the first internal cup played for, with the Dewar/Spence two round trophy up for grabs. The first round was played last Wednesday in beautiful golfing conditions, with light winds and almost wall to wall sunshine. A good entry of 46 played but, despite the conditions, only 4 players broke the course par with - possibily due to Scottish Golf once again tampering with everyone's golf course and handicap adjustments!!Top of the pile was Scott Ralph on 66 while Ryan Sutherland, Robbie Norquoy and George Rendall were all tied on 68s. Richie Burton was on 69 and several more players were in contention within another couple of shots. The second round was played on Sunday with another entry of 46 gents teeing up.The morning starters had some light rain to contend with but this cleared by 10.30am and the light westerly wind allowed for another good day for golf.On the day, no one actually broke par, with Chris Rae, Morgan Reid and Willie Marwick all tied on 69s, being the best scores of the day.In the overall standings only George Rendall managed to post a respectable second round score from the 1st round leaderboard. His 71 nett, for a total of 139, proved enough for him to hold on for the victory and collect the silverware. Proving once again to be the top golfer in his Bilco group! Steven Rendall was second on 141, after very steady rounds of nett 70 and 71, beating Scott Ralph on countback after the early leader slumped to a 75 in the second round.Congratulations George on picking up the first internal cup of the year. This week coming sees the W. Hourston Open played on Saturday and a good turnout is hoped for, for this regular fixture in the golfing calendar. In to Monday and the seniors monthly April medal followed by the May medal for all members on Wednesday. Plenty of golf to look forward to in the coming weeks! As a footnote the Gents section would like to wish Lydia and Sandra speedy recoveries after their recent misfortunes, take care folks!PD HOOK Photo:George Rendall - Dewar/Spence cup winner ... Orkney Golf ClubLadies SectionThe 1st round of the Gibbs Cup was played on Tuesday 16th with nineteen ladies taking part. With heavy rain forecast for the afternoon and evening the majority played in the morning and avoided another soaking. Sheila Hourston was in first place on 74[14] and her gross of 88 with a lovely two at the 13th was the best of the day. Michelle Clouston was one shot further back on 75[14] and Sally Inkster third on 76[21]. The 2nd round was due to be played on Thursday 18th but again due to the weather was postponed until Sunday 21st. Although rather wet early on Sunday and a bit damp underfoot it was dry above with very little wind. Moira Nicolson 73[18] and Lynn Shearer 73[12] tied for first place with Moira winning having the better inward nine. Sally Inkster was third on 77[21]. The only two recorded was by Moira at the 13th.Weather permitting the 3rd and final round will be played on Tuesday 23rd when the best two out of three rounds will decide the winner of the cup. Orkney Golf Club got its summer season underway this past week after the washout last Saturday. 66 gents took part in the Highland Park Open on Saturday with, a good turnout of visitors from Stromness adding to the entry. The weather was kind to the morning starters with bright, dry conditions and a slight south westerly breeze. This allowed for decent play on a course which, for the time of year, was superbly turned out by Chris, Laura and the rest of the greenkeeping squad. It was to be the earlier starters who would claim the prizes on offer, with the weather deteriorating in the afternoon to heavy rain and and a near gale westerly blowing up. This made for near impossible conditions for the later starters. In the Gross section, it was Lee Finlay who claimed top spot with 72, two strokes ahead of Michael Schinkel. Michael in turn was another two strokes ahead of Stromness Captain Andrew Woodward with 74 and 76 respectively just showing how tough the scoring was throughout the day.In the nett section again it was the early birds who picked up the goodies with Michael Moodie's 80 nett 67 pipping visitor Andrew Groundwater's 74 nett 67 on countback. Richard Ryder claimed 3rd spot with a nett 72, just ahead of Raymie Stanger on the same score. Nearest the pin in two, on the 18th, were Shaun Sutherland in the under 12 category while Nicky Bichan was closest in the 12+ section. The Club would like to say a huge thanks to Highland Park for their continued support and to Brian Firth for presenting the prizes. As a footnote, for further competition, the committee would be most appreciative if players who are on the prize lists could make every effort to attend for prize-giving's as a mark of respect towards the sponsors. Also it would be advisable for everyone to check the notice board before teeing off for any local rules alterations, etc. And could players please remember to rake bunkers after use. The previous Wednesday a sweep was played. Brian Firth was first with a nett 69. Second was Stewart Fotheringhame on 70 and 3rd was Ewan Rendall with the lowest gross of 73 nett 71. This week coming the Dewar/Spence first round will take place on Wednesday 17th concluding on Sunday. The April medal will be played on Wednesday 24th.And finally, the gents section would like to wish the new club Captain Neil Tait and his committee, Sandra Shearer, ladies Captain and fellow ladies committee, all the very best for the coming season. Also, to all the golfers throughout the county, have a great season and hopefully we can all enjoy some decent weather throughout the year.PD HOOK Attached photo Br lr Brian Firth, Ann Oag, Nicola Sutherland, Sally Inkster, Michael Schinkel, Nicky Bichan. Report of the conclusion of the Ladies' winter golf season at OGC:Seventeen ladies took part in the final day of Winter Golf on Easter Saturday, 30th March. In stark contrast to much of the winter the sun shone and there was little/no wind, but with the greens back in play the longer course meant that scores were higher than usual. Equal 6th on 43 were Diane Crawford and Linda Milne; Sheila Hourston was 4th on 41½; Sandra Shearer 3rd with 41; Maggie Learmonth was 2nd with 40½; and Lynn Shearer won with 40. There were two birdies: Linda Bonner with a 3 on the 8th and Shona Croy with a 2 on the 4th. Beiting and Brew provided a tasty selection of hot dogs for lunch before the ladies explored the foreign territory of the Back 9 in the afternoon with a gentle reminder of the experience of playing 18 holes nearly all at once. This brings the Winter Season to a close and the final overal results were as follows. 6th with 19 points was Lydia Campbell; 5th was Laura Sayer-Hill on 21; 4th, Carol Hartman with 22; Sally Inkster came 3rd with 27½; Linda Bonner 2nd on 28; and clear overall winner of the Winter League was Shona Croy, four points in front on 32. Shona also won the Winter Ringer with 29½ and Linda Milne was 2nd with 31½. Congratulations, Shona, on the double win. Our thanks go to Lydia for keeping us all on track over a particularly tough winter with 10 out of a potential 25 playing opportunities having to be cancelled due to poor weather. She received a cheerful bunch of flowers in appreciation. Also appreciated was Marlene's baking to accompany the post competition coffee and blether and she received an orchid by way of thanks. Finally, thank you to the mysteriously despondent Easter Bunny grudgingly distributing mini eggs after the competition. Hopefully it has cheered up now and has its bounce back ready for the new season! ... See MoreSee Less

Hi folks,A few updates on the course. Greenstaff have made alterations to the fway bunkers on the 9th, spading and pulling the edges in to create more aesthetically pleasing bunkers. These will be GUR until further notice. Please go around the ropes if you’re needing to retrieve your ball, staying clear of the new edges and turf please.Full course is in play, we will be placing out the men’s white tee markers on Monday, all yellow and reds are currently out.Bins, seats etc will go out next week, as well as the putting green back into play and the practice nets. The ditch at 6 is still to remain GUR until further notice. Many thanks Chris ... See MoreSee Less

Hi folks, A few alterations to the practice range, a colour coded distance plate system has been added, with 25yd distance ranges located up the middle, to help you gauge your accuracy (or inaccuracy 🤭)The plates were utilised out of the old tee plates which were previously located on all tees, and the signs were designed and made by Laura, great use of resources!! 👌🏻👌🏻 ... Wow. What an amazing weekend.Last month Orkney golf club juniors qualified for the golf 6s Nationals, which was played today, Sunday 1st.Our juniors made the long trip to Dunning golf club (via a rather rocky boat trip on Friday) where the finals were taking place.Today, against 6 other teams our juniors played some of their best golf - battling out against the other teams to try and claim a prize. We are so extremely proud to say our juniors Gregor, Kellan, James, Lewis Ewan and Woody came in with a score of 129 points making them rank in at 🎉 THIRD PLACE 🎉 We could not of made this trip if it hadn’t of been for your generous lot backing the juniors with such support. It’s been a wonderful experience for our juniors and they’ve come away with memory’s that will last them a lifetime. I’d like to personally thank the following business for their donations: Sutherlands, Sea Orkney, Highland Park, Houstons, Orkney street food, Rendalls, Heat orkney, Adam Stanger, R. Budge, Orkney builders, Williamson Butchers, S Patersons,Billy Elliot and all those that entered the raffle. Along with friends and family members all contributing too we have been overwhelmed with your support.Once again, thanks to all those that went away with the juniors too. Congratulations to Swanston golf who came 1st. Here is our THIRD PLACE winners! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 ... See MoreSee Less
